At
about 8:30 a.m., SBLGFD was paged to a rolled over cement truck at Highway
57 and Gateway Drive in the village of Sister Bay. They arrived to find
a fully-loaded cement truck overturned on a slippery roadway. Oil-dry
was immediately put down to soak up the fluids leaking from the truck's
engine.

In
a multi-agency effort, firefighters worked with civilians and a DNR warden
to set down multiple layers and types of barriers to absorb and block
as many leaked contaminants as possible as they flowed down the Sister
Bay hill. |

A crane was brought up from Green Bay to lift the cement drum from the cement truck, and then lift the chassis upright. Unfortunately the pitch of the Sister Bay hill was too great for the shoring material the crane normally carries. Extra material was generously provided by local businesses so the crane could achieve level and continue on the task. Shown left: the crane dwarfs the cement truck in a side-by-side photo. |

| At left, the cement drum was blowtorched free from the chassis and lifted onto a flatbed trailer. The yellow beam you see above the drum is capable of lifting 16 tons. At right, with the drum removed and departed from the scene, the crane lifts the chassis from its side and sets it upright. The truck was then oriented correctly on the road so it could be towed away. The scene was cleaned up and the road re-opened after 10 p.m. |
