Another job of the Fire Department is to set up a safe landing zone for the Eagle 3 medical transport helicopter from Green Bay.

Critical patients whose condition meets the needs for helicopter intercept and transport are transported directly to Green Bay via Eagle 3.

November 26th's landing zone was set up in the large grassy field at Highway 42 and Timberline Road near Gills Rock.

Above, a SBLGFD firefighter guides Eagle 3 to the landing zone. He is brightly illuminated by Eagle 3's 30 million candle-power "Night Sun."

To the right, Eagle 3's rotors reflect the lights of Washington Island Rescue's ambulance (right of helicopter) and SBLGFD's Engine 8 (left of helicopter, in the distance).

It is standard procedure for the fire department to close down roads which pass directly by a helicopter landing zone. This protects the safety of all involved: civilians, firefighters, patients, and the pilots and flight nurses in Eagle 3.
