22, 2003 Paged to a fire in the woods between the Wagon Trail Resort homes, and North Sand Bay Lane. With the above-ground flames under control, the fire spread into the peat and root system of the forest. When Indian Packs (jackets filled with water, worn by firefighters) and small-diameter hoses of the brush trucks proved insufficient for the fire smoldering underground, Sister Bay's Truck 25, the Long Distance Hose truck, was driven right into Lake Michigan to pull large volumes of water to the fire scene. The fire was finally extinguished by soaking the landscape with a large-diameter hose fed directly by Truck 25. |

| Early in the morning after the 4th of July, a slow-burning brush fire was reported at the Ellison Bluff County Park. Accessible only by water, Ephraim Water Rescue provided the use of their boat to shuttle firefighters and equipment to shore. In the park, firefighters fought the smoldering fire with Indian Packs. More water was needed than the packs could provide, so a hose was lowered over the Park's scenic overlook to extinguish the fire. Foam was used as it has better coating and penetration properties than water alone. The fire was extinguished by early afternoon. | |||
